POMV raises £5,000 for Polish Pyschologists’ Charity

The Polish Psychologist AssociationThe Polish Order of Malta Volunteers has raised £5,000 to support the charitable work of the Polish Psychologists’ Association (PPA) in the UK with a soirée of poetry and music held at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in London.

The black tie event on 25 April 2013 featured readings in English and Polish from the work of the poet Tadeusz Rózewicz alternating with the piano music of Chopin, Lutoslawski and Kilar. Almost 100 people attended, enjoying a champagne reception and buffet supper as well.

Guests were welcomed to the embassy by Deputy Ambassador Dariusz Laska on behalf of Ambassador Witold Sobków, Dr Marek Stella-Sawicki, Chairman of the Association of Polish Knights of Malta UK, and Joanna Meeson, chair of the POMV committee.

The Polish Pyschologists’ Association (PPA) helps Poles in Britain through a network of trained psychologists, who volunteer their time, knowledge and experience in their native tongue. In 2012, the PPA helped more than 1,500 people.

Monika Bodera, treasurer and non-executive director of the PPA, thanked the audience and the POMV for their support and talked about the importance of such fund-raising for an organisation providing its services free of charge. She introduced a video about the PPA’s work, which has now expanded from counselling to include a Saturday morning Polish-language play group for children.

The texts for the evening were chosen and read in Polish by Andrew Visnewski, a theatre director and RADA teacher, and in English by RADA graduate Brett Brown. The prize-winning young French pianist Matthieu Esnult provided the music and prestidigitator Guillaume Pigé astonished the audience with magic tricks at the reception and during the interval.

The POMV, which is primarily devoted to supporting the charitable work of the Knights of Malta at their medical centres in Poland, had set itself the target of raising £5,000. The target was reached thanks to generous donations from the audience, an auction featuring two lots of weekend stays at luxury hotels in Krakow donated by Jerzy Donimirski, and a popular raffle.
